The other day something happened at home and my wife said to me, "If you were not sure, why didn't you ask?"
I responded to her, "I wasn't unsure, I was just wrong." Which I quickly followed up with, "If I wasn't sure I would have asked. I was sure, I just wasn't right."
Most of us can likely relate to a similar situation. A situation where you were sure you were right, you didn't even question whether or not you were right, and only later found out that you were wrong.
I have found
this to be true in businesses and organizations as well.
The vast majority of people do what they think is right or best, most of the time. However, sometimes these well meaning people are wrong.
The next time you have to evaluate a mistake of one of your employees, volunteers, or team, ask yourself this question, "Is it possible they did what they thought was right, but they were just wrong?"
This alone will change the way you lead, manage, and view others.
