If the squeaky wheel gets the grease in your organization...you have a problem!
And the problem isn't the squeaky wheel!!
It's that you taught your employees that they must squeak to get rewarded. And certainly, that has created many more problems for you!
So how did you create that culture? It isn't because you're a bad leader. It isn't even because you don't care about your employees. Generally, this begins by being so busy servicing customers and clients that you didn't have time to service your employees. As a result, your employees learned that the only way that they can get recognized and attention is if they "squeak."
Why didn't your high-achieving employees get attention and recognition? Because in your business you figured that they'd keep doing the exceptional job that they'd been doing...and you are likely right, they did. However, when they saw their colleagues squeak and get ahead, your loyal employee became enlightened that their hard work didn't pay off as much as someone else's combination of marginal work and squeaking.
